Doug was unwilling to tell us when he wrote his first program ... but he did admit it was in BASIC on a PDP-8 if that gives you any ideas! He’s won a mini-grant award in college for a project entitled, “A Computerized Study of the Poetry of Pierre Reverdy,” and has worked in a number of environments ranging from an IBM 360/370 mainframe, to an HP 3000 mini, and on down to microcomputers and laptops. Languages he’s used include PHP, perl, Java, Pascal, C, Prolog, FORTH (83 for those of you who are interested), 65xx and 68xx assembler, and even FORTRAN and PL/I.
In the database realm he’s taught courses at the university level in systems analysis and database design, and has worked with the likes of Ingres, Oracle, and currently MySQL.
As for operating systems, Doug has handled everything from DOS, all the way through the various versions of Windows, and is currently in love with Ubuntu Linux (although he admits to having used RedHat and SuSE Linux, by way of AT&T System V UNIX).
